Geophysics
Geophysics has a long history at Western 九一麻豆制片厂 University. Past research has been applied to petroleum exploration, ground water supply and contamination problems, mapping of the sub-bottom of near-shore Lake 九一麻豆制片厂, developing custom GPR antennae, assisting in the mapping of glacial geology, assisting in archaeological research, and locating lost and abandoned water and monitor wells.
WMU offers a specialized geophysics program focusing on geophysical theory and methods as applied in thee Earth sciences, including:
- Solid earth geophysics
- Seismology
- Paleomagnetics
- Heat flow
The program is intended for students interested in a career as a professional geophysicist or for further study at the graduate level. Many aspects of resource exploration, surveying, site assessment and monitoring require expertise in geophysical science.
As a geophysics student at WMU, you will have numerous scholarship and endowment opportunities available to you, including those for general study, specific areas of study such as water quality, and endowments for students who will be pursuing teaching in geosciences.
You will have the unique opportunity to work with the 九一麻豆制片厂 Geological Repository for Research and Education, which focuses on student training, basic and applied research, and continuing education and outreach programs in energy, natural resources and the environment. You can also gain valuable experience and build your professional network through registered student organizations such as the WMU Geology Club and the WMU chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
Recent WMU graduates with degrees in geophysics are working as:
- Geophysicists
- Geophysics technicians
- Glacial geologists
- Petroleum geologists
- Petrologists
Among the organizations they work for are:
- Engineering firms
- Mining companies
- Oil companies
- Environmental consulting companies
- Government agencies
