Credit for AP, IB, or CLEP exams
The WMU Department of Spanish will award the following credit:
For Advanced Placement (AP) exam:
grade of 3 = 8 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000 and 4 credits for SPAN 1010] (no charge)
grade of 4 = 12 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000, 4 credits for SPAN 1010, and 4 credits for SPAN 2000] (no charge)
grade of 5 = 16 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000, 4 credits for SPAN 1010, 4 credits for SPAN 2000, and 4 credits for SPAN 2010] (no charge)
For International Baccalaureate (IB) (Higher Level) exam:
grade of 5 = 8 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000 and 4 credits for SPAN 1010] (no charge)
grade of 6 = 12 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000, 4 credits for SPAN 1010, and 4 credits for SPAN 2000] (no charge)
grade of 7 = 16 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000, 4 credits for SPAN 1010, 4 credits for SPAN 2000, and 4 credits for SPAN 2010] (no charge)
(NB: There are two forms of the International Baccalaureate Exam: Higher Level and Lower Level; WMU only recognizes Higher Level Exam Scores)
For College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam (both old test and new Spanish With Writing test):
grade of 50-55 = 4 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000] (no charge)
grade of 56-62 = 8 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000 and 4 credits for SPAN 1010] (no charge)
grade of 63-67 = 12 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000, 4 credits for SPAN 1010, and 4 credits for SPAN 2000] (no charge)
grade of 68-80 = 16 total credits [4 credits for SPAN 1000, 4 credits for SPAN 1010, 4 credits for SPAN 2000, and 4 credits for SPAN 2010] (no charge)
Important notes:
1) Students who receive AP, IB, or CLEP test credit for WMU SPAN 2000 but not WMU SPAN 2010 may enroll in WMU SPAN 2010 or they may take the online placement test in Spanish (/spanish/onlineplacement) and/or consult with a Department of Spanish Undergraduate Advisor to determine appropriate class placement at WMU. Students who receive AP, IB, or CLEP test credit for SPAN 2000 who enroll in 3000-level Spanish at WMU based on the WMU online placement test in Spanish or based on the advice of a Department of Spanish Undergraduate Advisor may receive credit for SPAN 2010 for $100 (flat fee) once they receive a grade of "C" or better in the 3000-level class. To receive such credit, students should see an Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of Spanish after receiving the passing grade in 3000-level Spanish at WMU.
2) Students who receive AP, IB, or CLEP test credit for SPAN 2010 should start their Spanish studies at WMU in SPAN 3160 or SPAN 3170.
3) Credits awarded by way of CLEP scores may not be counted as part of the 60 credits that can be transferred to WMU from a four-year institution.
