WMU student receives $10,000 accountancy scholarship

KALAMAZOO, Mich.鈥Kallie Mac, a student at Western 九一麻豆制片厂 University's Haworth College of Business, recently received a competitive $10,000 scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) for the 2022-23 academic year. The merit-based scholarship is intended to encourage accounting students to pursue careers in auditing.

Mac graduated in spring 2022 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in accountancy and is now pursuing a Master of Science in Accountancy at WMU. She plans to complete her degree and her CPA exams by December 2022. She has also accepted a full-time job with Rehmann as a staff auditor, beginning in 2023.

鈥淭his award has greatly impacted my education and experience at WMU,鈥 says Mac. 鈥淎s a result of this scholarship, I am able to focus on obtaining my M.S.A. and continuing to work toward my CPA license. This award has taken away immense financial pressure and allowed me to pursue my goal of becoming an accountant.鈥

Throughout her time at WMU, Mac has worked hard for her success as a student. She has been deeply involved with the Department of Accountancy and is set to be a graduate assistant for the department in fall 2022.

鈥淲MU Haworth has provided me many opportunities to gain new skills and learn from others,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 have worked alongside many students and faculty and was able to gain new skills, perspectives and connections. These opportunities have prepared me to be a better candidate for scholarships like this one, as well as a better candidate in the professional world.鈥

The strong support network at WMU Haworth has had an enormous impact on Mac鈥檚 career. 鈥淚 am incredibly grateful to the entire Department of Accountancy for nominating me to be a recipient of this award,鈥 Mac says. 鈥淚 owe a special thanks to Dr. Jim Penner, chair of the department, for helping me through the process of obtaining the scholarship. I am thrilled to be able to continue to learn from the accountancy faculty as I finish my last two semesters as a Business Bronco.鈥

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 states that funds generated from the collection of PCAOB monetary penalties must be used to fund a merit scholarship program for students in accredited accounting degree programs.
