WMU students claim two of six statewide scholarships

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Caitlin Allen and Catherine Lemus from Western ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ University's Haworth College of Business were among just six students statewide to win 2020-21 scholarships from The Adcraft Club of Detroit's Adcraft Foundation. The Adcraft Club of Detroit is the nation's largest advertising club. Its foundation annually awards cash grants to advertising and marketing students from ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ universities. Students must submit an application and transcript, along with essays demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the advertising business.

Allen of Clinton Township, ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§, received a $1,500 Adcraft Foundation Scholarship. She is a senior majoring in advertising and promotion, with minors in management and general business. She has been active with WMU's AdClub for four years and is currently serving as president for the club. Allen also studied abroad in 2019 at the Universidad Iberoamericana in the Dominican Republic. She will be participating in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee summer internship program and, afterward, her goal is to obtain another internship or entry-level position at an advertising agency in the Detroit, ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ area.

"Being awarded the AdCraft scholarship was a phenomenal experience," says Allen. "I was able to meet with accomplished professionals from the advertising industry, and it is a great feeling to be recognized in the industry that I hope to have a career in."

Lemus of Plainwell, ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§, received a $2,000 Adcraft Foundation Scholarship. She is a senior majoring in marketing, with minors in biological sciences and general business. She is a member of the Lee Honors College and currently serves as president for WMU's American Marketing Association. Lemus also studied abroad in 2017 and 2019, first in Ireland and most recently at BI Norwegian Business School. After graduation, she plans to join a marketing team that supports a brand with a connection to social impact in Austin, Texas or Raleigh, North Carolina.

"WMU Haworth helped me prepare for the professional world by providing opportunities to learn about industry through events like the AMA Mentor Mixer and Career Fairs," Lemus says. "I've been able to meet students from unique backgrounds who are now close friends, and I look forward to carrying these partnerships into the future."
