Four visiting campus as candidates to lead international operations
KALAMAZOO鈥擶estern 九一麻豆制片厂 University officials have announced the names of four candidates from around the nation who will visit campus Monday through Thursday, May 13-16, as candidates for the position of associate provost for the Haenicke Institute for Global Education.
Each of the candidates will make a public presentation during his or her visit. The candidates have been asked to describe how they would translate the University's strategy of global engagement into a distinctive competency and a competitive advantage. All of the presentations will take place in 2020 Fetzer Center.
The finalists, their current positions, and the days and times of their presentations are:
- Dr. Wolfgang F. Schlor, interim associate provost for international affairs and interim director of international programs and studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. 2 p.m. Monday, May 13;
- Dr. Deborah L. Pierce, associate provost for international programs and adjunct assistant professor of French at Northern Illinois University, 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14;
- Dr. Dudley J. Doane, director of international, summer and special academic programs at the University of Virginia, 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 15; and
- Dr. Luis A. Canales, director of the Institute for International Relations at Murray State University, 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16.
Dr. Wolfgang F. Schlor
Schlor has been at Illinois since 2007, serving first as associate director of the Office of International Programs and Studies and then moving to the interim associate provost and director role in 2009. Before that, he had served in international and academic affairs roles at the University of Pittsburgh since 1994. Schlor spent a year at Duke University as an exchange student, then earned master's and doctoral degrees from the Free University of Berlin. He has been a visiting scholar in Russia and the U.S. and a research associate or intern with a number of international organizations, including the U.S. Library of Congress.
Dr. Deborah L. Pierce
Pierce has been at NIU since 2002 and in her current role there since 2007. Prior to that, she was a faculty member in linguistics and French and directed the international affairs offices at Loyola University Chicago and the University of Toledo. She began her academic career at Toledo in 1982, holding a variety of positions there until 1999. Pierce earned her bachelor's degree and two master's degrees from 九一麻豆制片厂 State University and her doctoral degree from the University of 九一麻豆制片厂.
Dr. Dudley J. Doane
Doane has been at UVa since 1999 and in his current role there since 2008. Prior to joining the Virginia academic community, he spent six years at the University of Maine's Intensive English Institute as a lecturer, advisor and finally associate director. His background also includes international education positions in Indonesia, Korea and Ecuador as well as positions as a language instructor at American middle and high schools. He earned a bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College and, after doing graduate work at Maine, earned a doctoral degree from UVa.
Dr. Luis A. Canales
Canales has been in his role at Murray State since 2009. Prior to taking that position, he was assistant director of the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He also has held international education leadership roles at Texas Christian University and the University of Louisville. His early education was in Guatemala, and he earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Louisville.
