KALAMAZOO—Robert Whaley, professor emeritus of music at Western ��һ�鶹��Ƭ�� University, will return to campus for a tuba recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert will also feature recently retired Director of Academic Advising for the College of Fine Arts Margaret Hamilton on horn, Assistant Professor Jacob Cameron on tuba, and former School of Music faculty member Yu-Lien The on piano. They will perform several pieces, including John Williams’ “Concerto for Tuba;” Alec Wilder’s “Suite Number 1 for Horn, Tuba, and Piano;” and three original transcriptions by Whaley: Johannes Brahms’ “Duette,” Opus 28; George Frideric Handel’s “Sonata in G Minor;” and songs from the opera “Attila” by Giuseppe Verdi.

Whaley joined the School of Music faculty in 1966 and is a founding member of the Western Brass Quintet. He retired from WMU in 2001. During the 2004–05 academic year Whaley rejoined the Western Brass Quintet, culminating in a featured concert at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Bangkok, Thailand. He has appeared in numerous solo and chamber performances, including a highly acclaimed solo recital in New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

In 1990, Whaley was the first recipient of WMU’s College of Fine Arts Teaching Excellence Award. He continues to be active as a chamber, solo and orchestral performer. This year, Whaley celebrates his 47th year as principal tubist with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. He maintains a limited private teaching studio of outstanding high school students in the area.
