University to be host of large mathematics education conference

WMU hosts mathematics conference Nov. 1-4.

KALAMAZOO—The Western ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ University Department of Mathematics will act as host in early November of a large conference drawing together mathematics educators from across North America.

The 34th Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education is Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 1-4, in the Radisson Plaza Hotel. With the theme "Navigating Transitions Along Continuums," the conference includes four plenary sessions featuring leading mathematics education scholars from across the country.

Plenary sessions

  • Thursday, 7 p.m.: Dr. Jo Boaler, professor of mathematics education at Stanford University and editor of the Research Commentary Section of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, will share her experiences with scaling up innovations.
  • Friday, 1 p.m.: Dr. Jere Confrey, the Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education at North Carolina State University, will speak on the student learning continuum.
  • Saturday, 1 p.m.: A panel discussion will focus on navigating transitions along the school mathematics articulation continuum with Drs. Amanda Jansen, associate professor in the School of Education at the University of Delaware; Janie Schielack, professor of mathematics and associate dean for assessment and pre-K–12 education at Texas A&M University; Cathy Seeley, former middle school and high school mathematics teacher, K–12 district coordinator and K–12 state director of mathematics for Texas; and Jack Smith, associate professor of counseling, educational psychology and special education at ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ State University.
  • Sunday, 10:30 a.m.: Drs. Deborah Ball, dean of the University of ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ School of Education, and Suzanne Wilson, professor and chair of the Department of Teacher Education at ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ State University, will discuss transitions on the professional learning continuum.
