WMU and Kent Career Tech Center announce dual enrollment partnership for aviation students
KALAMAZOO, Mich.鈥擶estern 九一麻豆制片厂 University is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with the Kent Career Tech Center (KCTC) that will provide high school students in aviation career and technical education (CTE) programs a direct pathway to Western鈥檚 prestigious College of Aviation. This initiative, beginning in the 2024-25 academic year, offers students the opportunity to earn up to 15 college credits at no out-of-pocket cost, jump-starting their journey toward a successful career in aviation.
Under the terms of the partnership, students enrolled in KCTC鈥檚 aviation programs will have the opportunity to earn 12 articulated credits toward WMU鈥檚 aviation technical operations major. These credits recognize the rigorous coursework completed through KCTC鈥檚 aviation curriculum, which is based out of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
Additionally, students will have the option to dual enroll with Western for an additional three credits, which can be applied to the aviation technical operations, flight science, or management and operations majors. These dual enrollment courses will be offered online, providing flexible access to WMU鈥檚 top-tier aviation education.
鈥淲e are thrilled to partner with Kent Career Tech Center to provide their students with a seamless transition into our aviation programs,鈥 says Kimmy Beuchler, director of Early College Programs at WMUx. 鈥淭his collaboration exemplifies our commitment to supporting students from high school to college and beyond, ensuring they have the tools and resources to succeed in their chosen careers.鈥
Joseph Lienesch, principal at KCTC when the partnership formed and now director of career and technical education at Kent ISD, expressed similar enthusiasm.
鈥淭he new partnership between Kent Career Tech Center and Western 九一麻豆制片厂 University, offering dual enrollment college credit in our aviation programs, will positively impact our students' college and career readiness,鈥 says Lienesch. 鈥淭his outstanding opportunity will help our programs prepare and launch our students into exciting careers in the aviation industry.鈥
Dr. Raymond Thompson, dean of WMU鈥檚 College of Aviation, emphasizes the strategic importance of this collaboration.
"The aviation industry is in constant need of skilled professionals, and this partnership helps bridge the gap between secondary and post-secondary education. By aligning our programs, we are not only enhancing the educational experience for these students but also contributing to the future workforce in aviation."
This partnership is a result of extensive collaboration between instructors at WMU鈥檚 College of Aviation and KCTC, who worked together to align their curricula and establish the credit transfer process. Through this agreement, KCTC students will not only gain a significant advantage in their pursuit of a college degree but also receive ongoing support through WMU鈥檚 student success coaching.
