Arts and Sciences International Study Scholarship

About

As part of its commitment to increase access to international education, the College of Arts and Sciences at Western ¾ÅÒ»Â鶹ÖÆƬ³§ University invites qualified undergraduates to apply for funds to help support their study abroad experience. 

Scholarship recipients agree to provide a one-page written reflection describing their experience and the impact it has had on them. Recipients must also provide one picture that may be used in College of Arts and Sciences promotional materials.  Scholarship recipients may be called upon to share their study abroad experiences with other WMU students. 

Deadline 

October 18 for study abroad in the spring semester. (If your study abroad experience takes place over the holiday closure, you should also apply by October 18.) 

February 17 for study abroad scheduled for the following summer I, summer II, or fall semesters. 

Funding Details

  • Depending on available funds, scholarships typically range from $500-$1500.
  • The number of qualified applicants and the availability of funds will determine how many awards can be made.
  • This scholarship will be applied directly to the student’s WMU account and may impact the student's overall financial aid. Students should always contact the Office of Financial Aid to determine scholarship, grant, and award impacts on overall tuition and expenses.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Plan to complete a study abroad or international internship. 
  • Be a WMU undergraduate student in good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Be enrolled during the term for which funds have been requested. 
  • Have a declared major within WMU’s College of Arts and Sciences. Minors may also apply, but priority is given to majors.
  • Have completed or be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours within the College of Arts and Sciences. 

Guidelines for Proposal Preparation on Scholarship Universe

  • Please visit the Scholarship Universe Portal to apply: wmich.edu/finaid/aid-types 
  • Applicants will be prompted to submit a 1-2 page essay that covers the following topics:
    • Why you want to study abroad 
    • What do you plan to do while abroad (e.g., courses, research projects, or activities)? 
    • How this experience will impact/enrich you: a. Educationally/professionally b. Personally c. Culturally 
    • How will you share the information gained from your study abroad experience with the WMU community?
  • You will be prompted to input a faculty advisor email to endorse your application.
  • A copy of the student’s unofficial WMU transcript. 
  • Must be an official budget from the study abroad program’s online brochure, available through Broncos Abroad. Contact a study abroad specialist at (269) 387-5890 with questions about locating the correct budget.  
  • Students should NOT type up their budget–only a screenshot or download of the official budget from Broncos Abroad will be considered for funding.  
  • Please also describe any other planned sources of funding that will support the study abroad experience.
